| Basic Poker Tells |
|
When it comes to poker strategy, you want to be armed with as much information as possible. This means you want to be able to study other players to see what they have in their hands before you make your bets.
A tell is a player’s physical reaction to the hand that they have. Not only will this help you to see what you’re up against, but it can also help you with your body language to ensure that you’re not giving anything away.
Signs of a good hand
When a player has a good hand, you might see things like being overly casual about the round of play. The player might say that they really don’t ‘want to call’ or they just might act uninterested at all. Another tell might be that the player’s hands might shake or that their eyes look over the chips that they have to see what they can bet.
Signs of a weak hand
And if the player is holding a weaker hand, then you may see them acting in quite the opposite way. These players may try to bluff you by staring at you or holding their breath. When someone is staring at you, they are trying to intimidate, when they are really just attempting to hide the fact that they have nothing. And holding the breath is something that everyone seems to do when they are lying.
Signs of a drawing hand
If another player has a drawing hand, you might see signs like taking a long time to determine a bet. These folks are taking their time because they are truly calculating what they need to do in order to win the pot. Likewise, those that are close to a straight or a flush will look over their cards many times to check and recheck their next move.
In time, you’ll be able to spot these tells without even thinking about it. And if you’re really interested in being at the top of your game, you can give off ‘fake’ tells to make others think that you have things in your hand that you don’t.
