| How to Play Five Card Draw |
|
Getting back to the basics is a great way for a beginner to get started in the exciting world of poker. Five card draw is the original game that got this revolution underway and also a simple starter for the new player.
All of the players present begin with an ante (a small wager to begin the game). The person to the left of the dealer gets his or her cards first, five cards for everyone, face down. When each person has received their cards or as they receive their cards, the players can see what they have received.
After seeing what they have, betting begins with the person on the left of the dealer. This can be an indication of what a player already has or what kind of poker hand they are anticipating. If a player does not think that they can go far with the cards they have been dealt, then they can fold and end their play in the game.
For those that are still in, this is where the strategy begins. Players can tell the dealer how many cards they want (from one to five) to replace cards that they don’t need in their hand, and to hopefully gain the cards that they do need.
Those that take a lot of cards may not have a good combination of cards in their hand, while those that take few from the dealer may have a good hand to begin with or are placing their hopes on receiving the card that they are missing.
After they have received the cards from the dealer, then another round of betting occurs. This can be the stage where raises and checks can start. When the betting is done, the players show their hands to see who has won. |
