When it comes to the game of poker, it’s what you know that gets you ahead. Here are some basic poker terms that will keep you from being a ‘fish.’
Action
The action is the bet that’s being given.
Bad Beat
This is when a favored hand is beaten by a lucky chance in a lower hand.
Bump
To raise the present bet; to ‘bump’ it up
Button
A small marker used to designate who the dealer is; sometimes known as the dealer button.
Connectors a.k.a. Connected cards
When a player has two cards that are sequential, it’s known as having connectors.
Cutoff
This is the seat to the right of the dealer; known as the second best seat at the table.
Family Pot
When everyone stays in the current game, then it’s known as a family pot.
Fish
Someone who isn’t very good at poker
Flop
The first three cards that are dealt face up in Omaha or Texas Hold’em
Heads Up
When it’s just two players left in the betting
Hi/Lo
When the high hand splits the pot with the low hand; this can be determined by a particular cut off number (ex. 8 and higher)
Laydown
When you have a good hand, but you decide not to play it
Limp
Term for betting the absolute minimum for a hand
Muck
This is either the cards that have already been discarded, or it can be when a player folds his or her hand.
Nuts
The best possible hand for the given hand of poker
Paint
Having J, Q, K cards in your hand
Quads
This is when you have four of a kind cards in your hand.
Rainbow
When the cards are all of different suits, you have a rainbow.
River
This is the name for the fifth card that is dealt face up in Texas Hold’em, for example.
Suckout
When a strong hand is beaten because they hit their draw, it’s called a
suckout.
Texas Hold’em
When each player gets two cards, then five cards are dealt face up for all to see and the best hand is made by five of these cards.
Tilt
To become emotional and frustrated by a hand or another player
Trips
Trips is a good way to say that someone has three of a kind
Turn
The turn is the name of the fourth card that is dealt face up in Omaha, for example.
