How to Play Texas Hold'em
For the beginner poker player, Texas Hold’em can be a great place to start your bets. And with simple rules and basic moves, you can build on this experience to become better and better.

Betting
To begin, the betting rules can vary. Sometimes antes are used, but in most cases, the two players to the left of the one who is dealing put in some amount of money to get things started – these are blinds, or blind bets made without looking at your cards. The dealer then shuffles the full deck and gives each player two cards face down (pocket or hole cards). Then betting starts again.

Dealing cards
In many live game cases, the dealer will then discard the top card (burn card) of the deck to prevent cheating. Called the ‘flop,’ the dealer places three cards (the flop) in a face up position on the table for all of the players. Betting can increase from there and can include the normal bets of poker—check, bet, fold, and raise--starting with the person to the left of the dealer.

At this point, the dealer will get rid of one more card on the top of the deck, and place another on the table (also known as a turn card). This card can be used to complete each player’s hand if needed. The person to the left of the dealer will begin betting and in many cases, the bets can double.

A last card is placed on the table face up, called the river. At this point, all of the players have seven cards from which to form a five card poker hand. Another round of betting starts at this point. When the bets are done, the player to the left of the dealer starts by revealing his or her hand. This is called the showdown.

Whoever has the best hand, wins!
