What Beats What
Knowing what you need to get to beat someone else is vital in becoming a winning poker player. And the rules can be confusing at first, so take your time when starting out.

The goal of all poker players is to get a Royal Straight Flush. This is achieved by getting cards in the same suit and in the order 10-J-Q-K-A. The odds of this are very low and it will beat anything. Next in line is a straight flush which is similar to the Royal Straight Flush, but only needs the same suit of cards in order (2-3-4-5-6, for example).

After that is the four-of-a-kind. As the name implies, this is where you have four of the same cards in different suits—like four queens or four jacks (Q-Q-Q-Q-some other card). The higher the cards you have in your hand, the better. After this hand is the full house, which is heard often in poker circles. This is a fairly regular occurrence in poker. The full house includes a pair as well as a three of a kind (J-J-3-3-3, for example). Again, the higher the cards in the hand you have, the better the hand for you.

The next lower hand is the Flush, which includes five cards of the same suit, but not in any order. After the Flush is the Straight, which is any combination of suits, but is in a particular order (2-3-4-5-6, for example).

And at the bottom are three of a kind (K-K-K-2-4, for example) and then two pairs (K-K-2-2-5, for example). Next you have one pair (Q-Q, for example). And if no one has any of the aforementioned hands, then whoever has the highest card in their five will win.

By knowing what hand will beat what, you can determine wagers and how many cards you need to draw in five card draw. And realizing what hands others can have will help you to see if you can win, or if it’s time to fold.
