When you’re done with antes and blinds, you’re ready to get into some of the finer points of poker betting: the check, call, and raise. Each of these steps has its part to play in increasing the stakes of the game and can help you decide what other players might have in their hands.
The check is when everyone has received their cards, looks at them, and the first person to bet says check. This means that the person passes the bet onto the next person. That person can also say check or the entire table can be ‘checked around’ without any money being put into the pot.
A call is when the person has decided to bet. When a player calls, they want to see another player’s hand and do not want to raise the wager that is going around the table. In many cases, the call can end the betting so that the winner can be determined. A call will mean that the next player must match your bet as well.
A raise is when you increase the stakes of the game. After one person bets, you can then decide to raise your bet from that amount. Every person that bets after a raise can either call, raise again, or decide to fold his or her hand. A high raise can be the sign of a good hand for that particular player or also a sign of a bluff. Some players will only raise their bets if they don’t have anything, hoping that the others will assume that they will be beat.
Betting continues until all of the players have placed equal bets into the pot. At this point, another card may be put onto the table and subsequent rounds of bets will proceed. When the last card is put down and final bets are in, then the cards are shown and the winner is revealed.
